RE/NAISSANCE

3 Vancouver Premieres
April 15-17, 2010
Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Our official launch of the new company and the announcement of our 2010-2011 subscription series will take place April 15-17, 2010 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. For this special evening we are thrilled to announce that we will be presenting a triple bill of works by internationally renowned choreographers.

Herman Schmerman
Choreography: William Forsythe
Music: Thom Willems

Created by iconoclastic choreographer William Forsythe for New York City Ballet in 1992 with costumes by Gianni Versace, Herman Schmerman features seven dancers, syncopated rhythms that move in and out of the virtuosity of classical ballet and an exploration of the kinds of movement that lie in between. Through extraordinary physical dialogues, solos and duets, the dancers pass on everything they know about dance to the audience. According to Forsythe, it’s a ballet “…with no specific meaning…It’s just a very amusing dance piece.”

Things I told nobody
Choreography:Itzik Galili
Music: Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart and Satie

Israeli-born choreographer Itzik Galili, formerly a member of the Bat Dor Company and Batsheva Dance Company, is an internationally recognized choreographer based in Holland whose work has been presented by major dance companies around the world. He is the founder of NND/Galili Dance and is co-director of Dansgroep Amsterdam. Things I told nobody was developed using material from Blue Grass created by Galili for the Ballet de Monte Carlo in 1999 and is a detailed and expressive work whose sense of nuance and beauty will delight our audiences.

Short works: 24
Choreography: Crystal Pite
Music: Owen Belton

A series of 24 one-minute dance vignettes from solos to full company created by Vancouver’s own rising choreographic star Crystal Pite, Short works: 24 is a never-ending collection of movement ideas with no two episodes looking the same. The common element in these dances is the challenge of being able to move every muscle in the body independently while executing intricate footwork, creating twisted supple bodies as living sculptures in space.

This dynamic program of contemporary ballet will showcase the power, virtuosity and poetic expression of dance. A compelling evening not to be missed!
