Ballet Master/Mistress
Ballet British Columbia seeks an experienced ballet master/mistress to join our artistic department. In collaboration with other artistic staff, this individual will be accountable to the Artistic Director for the facilitation of artistic operations and for ensuring the artistic quality of the company. This position teams with the manager, artistic operations and the director of production.
The ballet master/mistress is responsible for learning Ballet BC repertoire with duties
to include teaching repertoire, teaching company class and coaching individual
and group dancers. Additionally, input into casting, scheduling and season
planning is required. This position may involve working with children and youth for
specific productions. Travel and touring may also be required.
This position assists with the Ballet BC Summer Dance Intensive and the company’s
pre-professional Mentor program.
The Company
Now in its 22nd season, Ballet British Columbia is a $3-million professional contemporary ballet company led by artistic director, John Alleyne. The 18-dancer company performs multiple performances in the fall, winter and spring seasons at Vancouver’s 2800-seat Queen Elizabeth Theatre and presents the danceAlive! Dance series, hosting two guest companies each season as well as a holiday Nutcracker at Christmas. Ballet BC supports dance education and outreach through its eleven community education programmes for children, youth and their families. The company tours regionally, nationally and internationally. Dancers are on an annual 38-40 week contract.
Current Ballet BC repertoire includes the works of Canadian choreographers John
Alleyne, James Kudelka, Jean Grand Maitre, Serge Bennethan, Crystal Pite,
Dominique Dumais, Mark Godden and Simone Orlando as well as works from
international dance makers such as Jiri Kylian, George Balanchine, Mark Morris, Lar
Lubovich, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, Nicolo Fonte and Septime
Weber.
This position will commence in July 2008.
