When told through the poetry of dance, Giselle’s underlying themes of love, betrayal and forgiveness are remarkable in their ability to rouse the emotions, and will resonate with audiences long after the final dancer leaves the stage. John Alleyne

Innocent love and betrayal, madness and the supernatural; Giselle is the ultimate Romantic ballet. This is the haunting legend of a young peasant girl, Giselle, who is charmed by the handsome Count Albrecht. When she discovers that Albrecht has deceived her, the heartbroken Giselle is driven to madness and death, but even the grave offers her no peace. Regarded as the masterpiece of the Romantic ballet treasury, Giselle was first performed in Paris in 1841. A work of singular beauty and grace, Giselle is a must-see for lovers of ballet tradition.

In the National Ballet’s version...the ballet became an expression of perfect love, perfectly danced. Dance International
When Giselle’s underlying themes of love, betrayal, forgiveness and redemption are told through the poetry of dance, they take on a power that is almost epic in its ability to stir the emotions...a show to remember The National Post
The whole production looked fresher and more pointed...a Giselle worthy of the National Ballet...the kind of dancing that has made the National Ballet of Canada a company of international stature. The Toronto Star

CHOREOGRAPHY Christopher Wheeldon
MUSIC György Ligeti

British-born choreographer Christopher Wheeldon has established himself as one of the freshest and most imaginative voices to have emerged in contemporary ballet in the past decade. Regarded as one of his more inventive works, his award-winning Polyphonia is a daring, poetic work of true originality. Set to ten stylistically varied piano pieces by Gyorgy Ligeti, the ballet suggests a range of human emotion.

Polyphonia was premiered by New York City Ballet in 2001 and by The National Ballet of Canada on June 2, 2007.
