Following a long career as a professional dancer, most notably with Nederlands Dans Theater, Rupert Tookey has held a variety of arts management roles at dance companies in Europe and North America. As Curator and Artistic Producer for the Nederlands Dans Theater, he helped guide the company through several key transitional phases including COVID-19. As Associate Artistic Director of Arts Umbrella Dance, he was part of a team responsible for leading one of the world’s most renowned pre-professional dance education programs. Since 2022, Tookey has held the position of Director of Artistic Operations at Ballet BC, responsible for the company’s international touring and revenue generation programs at its new home on Vancouver’s Granville Island. Tookey holds a Master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Management with a focus on leadership in dance. In 2016, Tookey founded the Dancer’s Council in the Netherlands, with the intention to support dancers in developing their voices to challenge outdated beliefs and processes still present within the art form today. The Dancer’s Council is generously supported by Omscholing Dansers Nederland and continues to support dancers in both the Netherlands and across Europe.
