Stephen Shropshire is a choreographer, curator and dance researcher. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School, holds a MA from the University of Maastricht, and is a doctoral candidate at PhDArts, Leiden University and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Between 2009 and 2012 Shropshire was artistic director of Noord Nederlandse Dans, and in 2016 his eponymous foundation was established to facilitate the development and presentation of new choreographic work. In 2017, Shropshire was awarded a special honor prize from the Dansersfonds ’79 for the “consistent aesthetic harmony in his work” and in 2018 his work We Are Nowhere Else But Here was awarded the VSCD ‘Zwan’ for best dance performance of the Dutch theatre season. Since 2018 he has been artistic coordinator and chief curator of the Nederlandse Dansdagen dansMuseum, and in 2020 he was the recipient of a ‘Fast Forward’ international production and research grant from the Dutch Performing Arts Fund.
