Technical Director

Reports to: Director of Productions and Operations
Responsible for: Ballet BC Production Staff
With the commencement of the 2018/19 Season, Ballet BC seeks an experienced Technical Director to join the team.

The Technical Director provides primary production support to the organization by executing the production plan for Ballet BC Creations and Tours. The position reports to the Director of Production and Operations on all matters as they relate to technical production elements, identified as required for each production.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend all scheduled production meetings and critical studio runs as required;
  • Scenic construction – drawings, budgeting and construction supervision of scenic and prop elements for new creations;
  • Staging logistics – develop and plot a staging and rigging plans for the productions based on the program order and technical requirements for each production and production on tour;
  • Lighting, Audio and Video preparation in preproduction;
  • In Collaboration with the Stage Manager implement the schedule in venue;
  • Coordinate the Ballet BC production staff, and oversee the Venue staffing and IATSE labour;
  • Maintain budget expectations for Ballet BC productions;
  • Work with the Director of Production in preparation for touring, venue review, production presentation adjustments, inventory and logistics preparation and production staffing review;
  • Communicate with touring venues, regarding staging and set up of the program, to ensure the programs integrity within the parameters set forth in the venue rider;
  • To ensure that the warehouse, props and set pieces are inventoried, organized and maintained to a high standard;
  • To assist with the moving, load-in, construction, repair and tear-down of sets and props during production periods, or as may be required in studio or other rehearsal venues;
  • Maintain a clean, safe and secure working area at all times;
  • Hire additional labour as required, at the warehouse and construction as needed;
  • On local productions, to arrange hire of vehicles to move set and lighting to and from venues, and to drive trucks up to 26’ in length;
  • To oversee all truck loading, unloading, shipping and receiving at the warehouse and Venues in which Ballet BC is performing;
  • As required, prepare production paperwork that will be necessary for the house crew;
  • Complete final as is technical documentation of productions for the Ballet BC production archive;

Archival Assistant (Canada Summer Jobs)

The Archivist Assistant will work under the direction of a Professional Archivist, in the creation of a physical and digital inventory and archival database, of the Marketing and Artistic works of Ballet BC.

The 9-week term of the position is from July 2 to August 31, 2018. Hours will typically be Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm.
Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist a Professional Archivist with:

  • Inventory and Organize materials in categories and subcategories
  • Accessing existing digital documents, images and video from various sources
  • Creating a “box-level” inventory: reviewing and labeling what is in physical storage boxes of materials and loose materials.
  • Sorting and flagging duplicate materials
  • Writing basic descriptions of individual items to include subject, format
  • Inventory and Organize materials in categories and subcategories
  • Data entry and tracking of inventory materials and descriptions using Excel spreadsheet software
  • Uploading inventory item level descriptions for digitized static and moving image files to online database
  • Documenting archival process, standard operating procedures and preservation recommendations
  • Physical re-housing of material
  • General administrative duties as required to fulfill the requirements of the inventory project including phone, email and in-person communication with relevant external stakeholders and Ballet BC internal departments
