Michael Garcia is a Vancouver based dancer and choreographer currently working as a full time artist with Ballet BC. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Garcia has always had a passion for choreography. During his early training at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts, he frequently used his elective credits to dive as deep as he could into composition classes, this interest followed him into his time at The Juilliard School. While pursing his degree, he was recognized as an Outstanding Choreographer by YAGP, selected for Juilliard’s Choreographic Honors and began to find much passion in collaborating with choreographers and peers alike.
Being a professional dancer, Michael has always found the greatest reward in collaborative processes when he has been trusted to collaborate with artists like Roy Assaf, Medhi Walerski, Bobbi Jene Smith, Crystal Pite and Imre & Marne Van Opstal. Since joining Ballet BC in 2022, he has been an Artistic Producer for the dancer led initiative Take Form, in which the dancers of Ballet BC take responsibility for all aspects of a show and produce an evening of works planned, performed and presented by the artists. His participation in this event has been the catalyst for his creations Here Be Dragons and most recently Anchors Aweigh—the creation of which has further assured his passion and dedication to creating and sharing his voice. He is beyond thankful to Medhi Walerski for his belief and trust. Michael sees this as another great step along the path of his own choreographic career.
