Ballet BC Annex

Ballet BC Annex is the junior ensemble of Canada’s leading contemporary dance company.

Each season, Ballet BC Annex presents works by renowned and emerging choreographers on stages across the province of BC, bringing world-class dance repertoire to local and regional schools and community venues. Ballet BC Annex dancers are a cohort of pre-professional artists currently training with Vancouver dance institutions Modus Operandi and Arts Umbrella Dance. The program supports the development of the dancers’ careers by providing professional stage experience, while offering creation opportunities for emerging choreographers.

In schools, insightful workshops and Q&A sessions led by Annex dancers and Ballet BC’s Education and Engagement team will accompany each performance, offering a closer look into the choreographic process and the career path of a dancer. Students learn excerpts from the performance and engage in creative dialogue, contributing to a broader understanding of dance as a genre and form of expression.

In the 2026/27 season, Ballet BC Annex will share a triple bill of three exciting works: World premieres by Canadian choreographer Cameron Fraser-Monroe and Ballet BC company dancer Michael Garcia, as well as Vancouver-based Out Innerspace’s Last Flower, originally created for Ballet BC in 2024.

World Premiere | Cameron sinkʷə Fraser-Monroe

Cameron sinkʷə Fraser-Monroe is a choreographer, director, and member of the Tla’amin First Nation. Rooted in both classical training and Indigenous dance traditions, Cameron’s practice spans Hoop Dance, Grass Dance — studied under Elder Mollie Bono — and a performance career that has taken him to stages across North America and internationally.

As a choreographer, his commissions include the National Ballet of Canada, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Fall for Dance Festival NYC, among others. Cameron is currently Artist-in-Residence at the National Theatre School of Canada and continues to practice and present Hoop Dance as a living, vital part of his artistic identity.

Cameron will premiere a new creation for Annex in fall 2026.

Last Flower | Out Innerspace

Founded by BC-born artists Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond on unceded Coast Salish land in 2007, Out Innerspace (OIS) is driven by an uncompromising commitment to rigour, ingenuity, and the belief that dance can reflect a world in constant transformation.

With an international touring history spanning over 15 countries, their commissions include works for Netherlands Dance Theatre 2, Göteborg Opera Dance Company, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, and Ballet BC, among others. Through their education program Modus Operandi and Vancouver studio Q7, OIS remains deeply invested in nurturing the next generation of Canadian dance artists.

Last Flower was originally created for Ballet BC’s main company in 2024 and will be reimagined for the Annex stage in fall 2026.

World Premiere | Michael Garcia

Born in McAllen, Texas, Michael Garcia trained at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before earning his BFA from The Juilliard School under the direction of Alicia Graf Mack. He has performed with Loni Landon Dance Projects and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and is currently in his fourth season as a company artist at Ballet BC.

Beyond performing, Michael is an active teacher and choreographer, with commissions including Arts Umbrella Dance and four outstanding choreography awards from YAGP. He is passionate about cultivating his practice both in Vancouver and around the world.

Michael will premiere a new creation with Annex in fall 2026.
