The company's Board of Directors has appointed Kathy MacKenzie as Managing Director of the organization
Vancouver, BC — Following an extensive and competitive search, Ballet BC is thrilled to announce its Board of Directors has appointed Kathy MacKenzie as Managing Director of the organization. Kathy will join Artistic Director Medhi Walerski to form a new, visionary leadership team for the company moving forward.
With more than two decades in the non-profit performing arts sector including 17 years with Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre Company, Kathy brings a robust blend of strategic leadership and resource development expertise to Ballet BC. Her career achievements include key initiatives aimed at building audiences, fostering corporate and individual giving relationships, strengthening brand awareness, and ensuring financial health.
“The Board of Directors is delighted to introduce Kathy as Ballet BC’s new Managing Director,” says Bob Armstrong, Chair of the Search Committee. “Known for her forward-thinking approach to leadership and for ensuring organizational sustainability, her appointment promises to strengthen what is already a bright next chapter for the company. Her operational expertise, rooted in many years of commitment at one of Vancouver’s most renowned arts organizations, will enable us to realize key goals for the future.”
Artistic Director Medhi Walerski adds, “I am excited to work alongside Kathy. Her reputation for strong leadership skills and strategic insight is inspiring, and I am confident that her experience within Vancouver’s arts community will greatly enhance our vision and mission. I look forward to welcoming her to the Ballet BC family and sharing many wonderful experiences together.”
Originally from Toronto and a Vancouver resident since 2007, Kathy’s career is distinguished by her commitment to community engagement and organizational excellence. Since joining the Arts Club Theatre Company in 2007, Kathy has advanced through various roles in the organization, including leading the Fund Development Department for seven years. Since 2021, she has held the role of Managing Director, an integral part of the company’s leadership team alongside the Executive and Artistic Directors.
Kathy’s background also includes roles with the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts. She contributes to the broader community through current and past roles on the Board of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and NatureKids BC. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from UBC, and a postgraduate certificate in Arts Administration and Cultural Management from Humber College.
“My nearly 17 years with the Arts Club Theatre Company has deepened my commitment to strive for excellence in the performing arts,” says Kathy MacKenzie. “I am looking forward to supporting the incredible team at Ballet BC. I personally have had the privilege of experiencing outstanding performances by the company. These experiences, along with Medhi Walerski’s artistic vision, the company’s commitment to developing new work, and looking after both artists and staff drew me to the organization.”
Kathy will officially assume the role of Managing Director on September 3, 2024. The Board of Directors would like to share a heartfelt thanks to Ballet BC Director of Artistic Operations Rupert Tookey for his unwavering commitment and contributions to the company as Interim Managing Director.
