Student and Community Dress Rehearsal and Livestream

Ballet BC offers school-aged students the opportunity to experience a live virtual dress rehearsal ahead of each program performed at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Access to the student dress rehearsal livestream is free, but pre-registration is required.

DanceXpress—An Essential Foundation

Instructor Lara Barclay leads Dance Xpress, a series of in-person workshops that offer an explorative movement and arts experience to at-risk children and to youth whose access to dance specifically—and arts and culture more broadly—is otherwise limited. Participants are introduced to the fundamental dance elements, improvisational methods, choreography, and partnering exercises with an emphasis on collaboration and reflection. These workshops also integrate various art forms in response to dance such as writing, poetry, sculpture, theatre and visual art. Sessions may vary depending on age and specific needs of the group; No previous dance experience necessary. All art supplies are provided.

Master Classes for Secondary Schools

This program offers BC secondary school dance students the unique opportunity to learn choreography from a Ballet BC company dancer. Teaching selections will include excerpts from the company’s current repertoire. Master classes include a warm-up, repertoire instruction, and a Q&A.

Production Workshop: Elements of Stage Design

This workshop provides a fun and interactive way for students to engage with various elements of dance production. Each workshop begins with an engaging movement warm-up and an introduction to the various design elements including choreography, set design, lighting, and costumes. Students will then be divided into groups to work collaboratively with one design aspect of the production. The workshop concludes with an informal performance. No prior dance experience is necessary. 

Duration: 90 minutes (adaptable to school schedule)


Dance Video Series

Ballet BC’s dance video series introduces school-aged children to a fun and positive online learning experience in dance. Led by a Ballet BC dancer, each session will include an excerpt of choreography from the company’s repertoire or original choreography created by a company dancer. The dance video series is intended to encourage students to experiment with movement, combine dance steps in sequence, and learn about artistic expression. No previous dance experience necessary. 

In the 2021/22 season, Ballet BC is offering nine new dance videos featuring seven diverse pieces of choreography. If you are an educator interested in sharing the dance video series, stay tuned. More details to come.
