Frequently Asked Questions

Where does MOVE take place?

All classes and workshops take place at Ballet BC, at 1286 Cartwright Street on Vancouver’s Granville Island.

Is there parking on Granville Island?

Yes, but parking is limited, and paid parking is in effect from 9 AM-10 PM daily.

We recommend exploring other ways of getting to Granville Island.

What should I wear/bring?

We recommend comfortable athletic clothes or dancewear for all classes, and soft ballet shoes or socks for ballet class. No shoes that have been worn outdoors are permitted inside the studios.

For yoga and pilates classes, we have mats, mat cleaning supplies, and other props available for your use during the class.

Please bring a water bottle, and note that no food or drinks besides water are allowed in the studios.

Where can I buy dance gear?

Dance gear is not necessary, athletic clothing will work for all classes. If desired, you can find dance gear here:

The Dance Shop in Vancouver, 1089 W Broadway
Duck Feet in North Vancouver, 1079 Marine Dr
Dance Box in Coquitlam, 435 BC North Rd
Dance Box in Langley, #114 20226 Fraser Hwy

Are there showers and changerooms available?

Yes, we have private shower and changeroom facilities available for your use.

Where can I leave my valuables?

You may take your bags and valuables into the studios with you. Outdoor shoes must be taken off outside the studios and left in the hallway.

Do I need to be a professional dancer to take the dance classes?

Not at all! We offer classes for all levels, with options suitable for students completely new to dance or those who have previous dance experience.

What’s the difference between series and drop-in classes?

Series are by registration and are progressive, multi-week classes that are meant to improve the student’s skill in the style of dance as the weeks go on. There will be a natural evolution as the class learns and improves technique but no final showing or piece of choreography to learn.

Drop-in classes are weekly sessions that don’t require a multi-week commitment. Students are welcome to attend as many or as few classes as they’d like. We have varying levels of difficulty for our drop-in classes, but the majority are suitable for beginners.

How do I decide which level to register for?

When deciding on a level, we recommend students consider their previous dance experience and what they are hoping to get out of a class.

Our Intro classes are intended for students with absolutely no dance experience. Beginner classes are intended for students with little-to-no dance experience, or for students who have experience but are looking for a refresher on the basics. Intermediate classes are intended for students who have at least some dance experience or who have completed a Beginner Ballet series with MOVE.

Students are able to try out the first class in a series in order to determine if they would like to continue. If they would like to continue, the full regular rate for the series will be owed. If not, the drop-in rate for the completed class will be owed. Please email classadmin@balletbc.com if you would like to try a class before deciding to register.

I’m finding this series to be too hard/easy for me. Can I switch levels?

Students who are signed up for a series may transfer to another level within the first 3 weeks if they are not finding it to be a suitable level. Requests to transfer after the date of the third class in the series may be honoured if the teacher agrees that the student will be able to join and pick up on the material covered in class so far.

Will the same teacher be teaching the same class each week?

Our instructors are scheduled to teach the same class each week. However, occasionally Ballet BC company artists perform on tour and aren’t able to teach. If an instructor isn’t able to teach their regular class, MOVE has a robust roster of highly-qualified and talented instructors to substitute for them.

Are the yoga classes all-levels?

Yes. No experience is required and modifications will be available to anyone who needs them. All of our yoga classes are drop-in classes.

What is your refund policy?

Series
If a student signs up for a series and cancels at least one week (7 days) before the first class, a full refund will be issued. If a student cancels within the week before the first class, a partial refund for the cost of all but one class will be issued. Once the series starts, if cancelling before or on the date of the third class, a refund will be given for the remaining classes. If a student cancels after the third class, no refund will be issued.

Drop-ins
We require cancellations for drop-in classes to be made at least four hours before the start of class. If you need to cancel or change your registration, please contact us by email at frontdesk@balletbc.com. Cancellation requests made by email less than four hours before the start of class will be considered a late cancellation and will not be refunded.

Do you offer a refund for MOVE passes if some classes cannot be used?

If a 10 or 20-class MOVE pass is purchased and no classes are booked within 10 days, a full refund can be issued on request. If a student would like a refund for the remaining classes after using up to 3 classes, refunds can be issued on a pro-rated basis. No refunds will be issued after 3 classes have been used.  Please note that MOVE passes are valid for one year from the date of purchase and cannot be extended if classes are unused.

Is there an age limit?

Our classes are open to adults aged 18 and up.

Arts Umbrella on Granville Island offers dance classes for youths.

What if I can’t attend every class in a series?

If a series student does not attend a single class or multiple classes within a series, no refund will be given. However, students can take a drop-in class as a makeup class. This can be done up to three times in a series, after which no refund or makeup class will be provided.

What do I do if I’m running late?

We try our best to accommodate latecomers unless the instructor has requested no late entry or if it’s beyond 30 minutes after the class has begun (for the student’s safety as they will have missed the warmup portion of class.) If a student is late to class and unable to join, they may register for another class to make up for the missed class. Otherwise, the class the student arrived late for will be considered a late cancellation and will not be eligible for a refund. Please contact frontdesk@balletbc.com if you’re running late and would like to reschedule your class.

What should I do if a series is full?

Once a class is full, a waitlist will be made available. Please contact classadmin@balletbc.com to be added to the waitlist if the class you’d like to attend is full.

I am waitlisted. When will I know if a spot becomes available?

We will contact those waitlisted via email as soon as a spot opens up. If those waitlisted have not heard from us by the date of the third class, they can assume the class is full. Follow @balletbcmove on Instagram or sign up to be added to our mailing list to be the first to know about future classes.

Will Ballet BC merchandise be available for purchase?

Yes! A range of Ballet BC merch and apparel will be available for purchase on site at Ballet BC.

Who should I contact about lost property?

Ballet BC will collect items left on the premises and will store them to be claimed. However, Ballet BC is not responsible for personal items left unattended. Staff will make reasonable efforts to identify and locate the owner of valuable items. All items will be stored for thirty days and will be donated if not claimed.
