New Peña
Andrea Peña
A world premiere from the second recipient of the Ballet BC Emily Molnar Emerging Choreographer Award: Bogota-born, Montreal-based Andrea Peña. A former dancer with Ballet BC, this is Pena’s first commission by the company. Known for exploring the intersection of choreography, design, and new media, works by the multidisciplinary artist’s company, Andrea Peña & Artists (AP&A) have been presented by numerous organizations including Danse Danse, Agora de la Danse, the National Arts Centre, Tanzmesse NRW & TanBremen (Germany), Baerum Kulturhus (Norway), Carreau du Temple (Paris) amongst others. In 2023, Peña was the first international choreographer to be awarded the prestigious La Biennale di Venicia’s call for new choreographic work by an artist under age 35, premiering AP&A’s most recent work BOGOTÁ for the 2023 Biennale’s opening.
WorkPASSING
Johan Inger
In PASSING, legendary Swedish choreographer and longtime Ballet BC collaborator Johan Inger traverses a vast landscape of human emotion, taking audiences on an epic, theatrical, often touching ride. Commissioned by Ballet BC in the 2022/23 season and inspired by climate catastrophe, PASSING explores relationships, from the intimate to the societal. Set to an original score by Amos Ben-Tal as well as selections from Erik Enocksson and Moondog, the sonic journey is as beautifully complex and captivating as the movement language throughout.
WorkNew Magadan
Fernando Hernando Magadan
Building on a longstanding relationship with the company, including the celebrated White Act created for the 2014/15 season, Spanish choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan shares an exciting new commission.
