Six Reasons to See DAWN

1. Stellar New Talent

Ballet BC Emerging Artists Imani Frazier, Joziah German, Kelsey Lewis, and Nathan Bear will make their mainstage Ballet BC debut at DAWN. We can’t wait to share their exceptional talent with you. Read a recent profile of Nathan here, and learn more about all of our 2024/25 Ballet BC company dancers here.

2. The Crystal Pite Experience

One of the world’s most in-demand choreographers also happens to call Vancouver home. A dancer with Ballet BC from 1988-1996, Pite has gone on to create some of the most talked-about contemporary dance works of our time. Frontier is no exception, and this is a rare opportunity for West Coast fans to experience the reimagined North American premiere of a large-scale Pite creation. (Fun fact: Ballet BC Artistic Director Medhi Walerski and Director of Artistic Operations Rupert Tookey performed in Nederlands Dans Theater’s 2013 cast of Frontier).

3. The Power of Collaboration

Twenty-four dancers take the stage for Frontier. To bolster the cast, Ballet BC is thrilled to welcome dancers from Vancouver’s Arts Umbrella Dance to join our company artists. Arts Umbrella is one of the world’s leading dance education institutions, and our special connection enables us to bring you even more impactful performances while providing professional stage opportunities for the next generation of remarkable dance talent.

4. Quietness

The absence of sound was an inspiration for renowned French choreographer Pierre Pontvianne while working on his world premiere this August in our Vancouver studios. The dancers and Pontvianne explored themes of intrinsic musicality within the body, and the realization that silence in space is incredibly rare. “The dancers generating their own internal music is something I find profoundly beautiful and powerful,” says Pontvianne.

5. A Little Taboo

Those lucky enough to catch the world premiere of Heart Drive in 2022 know it deserves to be seen again. “A bit like Bosch by way of The Matrix” (Stir), the dreamlike piece gives audiences the chance to dive into a world of desire and pleasure and power—the ultimate exploration of our sexual nature and the fundamental energies we possess. Garnering standing ovations from sold-out crowds in Europe this past spring, we’re so excited to bring it home again. Watch the trailer here.

6. Sharing the Moment

Is it just us, or does the idea of sharing a live performance thrill now more than ever? Dance is an art form that cannot be replicated or reproduced. It is universal, based in human connection, self-expression, and finding meaning in our bodies in motion. Dance is in all of us. We cherish performing for you at the theatre, and with only three performances, that time is precious. We hope you can share the moment with us!
